Fun things to do online: Wordle

 

I just came across this website called Wordle, which allows you to create clouds of words of any type of text. I took my posting about adjectives and pasted it at their website and changed the colors a little bit to my liking.

I think it is pretty cool! Try it out!

Teaching: Power of Songs

I have always liked songs as a good way to teach our children some English vocabulary. It also teaches rhythm, differences in accents, and intonations. A good way to introduce songs in the classroom is by celebrating certain events or by introducing them as a monthly activity. Our school celebrated Peace Day this year and the kids ended up singing "Heal the world" by Michael Jackson. I know the controversy in regards to this man's life, but I did not choose the song for this event. In any case, it was still a very good oppotunity for them to listen, memorize, and sing a song.

The video above was made by me to capture the energy of the day. I also made a presentation in Prezi about English songs.

Grammar: Adjectives

I am going to start my blog by talking about adjectives. Adjectives according to Merriam-Webster is: "a word belonging to one of the major form classes in any of numerous languages and typically serving as a modifier of a noun to denote a quality of the thing named, to indicate its quantity or extent, or to specify a thing as distinct from something else." 

We use adjectives to describe items, people, or animals. We use adjectives to compare and show degrees of comparison. These are known as the comparative and superlative.


Example:
Adjective-------------Comparative-----------------Superlative
        rich                                     richer than                                       the richest
        tall                                      taller than                                         the tallest
     beautiful                          more beautiful than                              the most beautiful


There are also irregular adjectives that do not follow a pattern.


Example:
Adjective-------------Comparative-----------------Superlative
     good                                     better than                                         the best 
      bad                                      worse than                                       the worst
      far                                        further than                                     the furthest

This video from School House Rock does a very good job at explaining the usage of adjectives. 

Children should be able to associate the words with the events that occur in the video.
